Getting Engaged in Cabo San Lucas: Planning the Perfect Cabo Proposal

There are a lot of beautiful places in the world to get engaged, but there is something especially magical about getting engaged in Cabo San Lucas.

Maybe it’s the way the light changes over the ocean just before sunset. Maybe it’s the dramatic coastline, the warm desert landscape, or the fact that Cabo somehow makes even a simple walk on the beach feel like an occasion. Whatever it is, Cabo has a way of making big moments feel even bigger.

As a Cabo wedding and engagement photographer, I’ve seen quite a few proposals unfold here, and one thing I’ve learned is that the best proposals aren’t necessarily the most elaborate ones. They’re the ones that feel like you.

If you’re thinking about getting engaged in Cabo San Lucas, here are some of the things I would think about before planning that very important question.

Why Get Engaged in Cabo?

Cabo San Lucas is one of those places where you don’t need to do much to create a beautiful setting.

The Sea of Cortez, the desert landscape, palm trees, rocky coastlines, and incredible sunsets give you a pretty spectacular backdrop before you even add the proposal.

And because Cabo is such a popular destination for couples, there are so many different ways to plan the experience. You could propose during a private dinner, on the beach, from a boat, at your resort, during a couples photography session, or somewhere completely unexpected.

That flexibility is one of my favorite things about photographing proposals here.

Your proposal doesn't have to look like anyone else's.

Choosing Where to Propose in

Cabo San Lucas

One of the first things I talk about with couples is the location.

And while Cabo San Lucas is the destination most people immediately think of, the entire Los Cabos area offers incredible possibilities. Cabo San Lucas, the Corridor, and San José del Cabo all have their own personalities.

For some couples, a beach proposal is exactly what they envision. For others, a private resort setting makes more sense. Some want dramatic ocean views, while others prefer something quieter and more intimate.

There are also couples who don't want their proposal to feel like a proposal at all.

That is where I can help.

One of My Favorite Ways to Photograph a Surprise Proposal

One of the biggest challenges when planning a surprise proposal is figuring out how to get your partner to the right place without making them suspicious.

One of my favorite solutions is to make the photography session itself part of the plan.

You can simply tell your partner that you've booked a couples photography session while you're in Cabo. We start just like any other session—walking around, taking some portraits, laughing, enjoying the scenery.

Then, at the right moment, I give you the signal.

You get down on one knee.

And suddenly, what started as a normal photography session becomes the moment you've been waiting for.

Another fun option is a family photography session if you're traveling with family. We can begin by photographing everyone together, move into smaller groupings, and eventually get the two of you alone.

Then I'll create the opportunity for the proposal to happen naturally.

The advantage of doing it this way is that your partner isn't standing around wondering why there is a photographer hiding behind a bush or why you're acting suspiciously all afternoon.

The photography session is completely legitimate. They just don't know the best part is coming.

Don't Forget What Happens After They Say Yes

This is something I think about a lot when photographing proposals.

The proposal itself is important, but it only lasts a few seconds.

What happens immediately afterward can be just as meaningful.

There's the reaction. The laughter. The disbelief. The hugs. The tears. The moment when you both realize, we're actually engaged.

And then there is usually that wonderful moment when the nerves disappear and you can finally enjoy what just happened.

That's why I don't consider my job finished after I photograph the actual proposal.

I want to photograph everything that happens afterward, too.

We'll take some time for just the two of you to breathe, celebrate, and take in the moment. Then we can continue with a few beautiful portraits while you're still riding that just-got-engaged high.

Those are often some of my favorite images from a proposal.

You're no longer nervous about the surprise. You're simply happy.

What Time Should You Propose in Cabo?

If photography is important to you, I almost always want to talk about timing.

Cabo has incredible light throughout the day, but there is something particularly beautiful about the hours surrounding sunset.

That warm, softer light can make the coastline absolutely incredible, and it gives us the opportunity to photograph the proposal and then continue into an engagement session afterward.

But here's the thing: the best time for your proposal isn't necessarily the time with the prettiest light.

It's the time that makes sense for you.

If your partner would never agree to a sunset photo session because they know you hate having your photo taken at that time of day, that's probably not the right plan.

The goal is to create something that feels natural.

The photography should fit into your story—not the other way around.

Should You Include Family and Friends?

This is another personal decision.

Some couples want the proposal to be completely private. Others want their parents, siblings, or closest friends waiting nearby to celebrate afterward.

If you're including family, there are plenty of creative ways to incorporate them without giving away the surprise.

We can photograph everyone together before the proposal, have them hide nearby, or even arrange for them to appear afterward.

There is something incredibly special about photographing the moment when a newly engaged couple turns around and realizes the people they love were there the entire time.

Your Cabo Proposal Should Tell Your Story

There is no single “perfect” way to get engaged in Cabo San Lucas.

Maybe yours happens on the beach.

Maybe it's over dinner.

Maybe you're on a private boat watching the sun disappear behind the horizon.

Maybe your partner thinks you're simply taking couples photos when you suddenly get down on one knee.

The setting matters, but the story matters more.

As a photographer, my favorite part of photographing proposals isn't just capturing the exact second someone says yes. It's capturing everything around that moment—the nervous anticipation, the surprise, the reaction, the laughter afterward, and the way two people look at each other when they realize their lives just changed.

If you're planning to get engaged in Cabo, I would love to help you create something that feels personal, natural, and completely yours.

Because years from now, you'll remember where you were when you asked the question.

And hopefully, when you look back at your photographs, you'll remember exactly how it felt, too.
