Getting Married in Cabo in the Summer: Pros and Cons of a July–September Wedding
When most couples picture a destination wedding in Cabo, they probably imagine blue skies, warm sunshine, ocean views, and a perfect sunset. And while Cabo certainly delivers on all of those things throughout much of the year, getting married in Cabo during the summer months of July, August, or September comes with a few unique considerations.
As a Cabo wedding photographer, I think summer weddings deserve a little more attention than they usually get. They aren't necessarily the "wrong" time of year to get married here. In fact, there are some really compelling reasons to consider a summer wedding in Los Cabos.
But there are also some things you should know before booking your date.
So, let's take an honest look at the pros and cons of getting married in Cabo in July, August, or September.
The Pros of a Summer Wedding in Cabo
1. Summer weddings can be more affordable
One of the biggest advantages of getting married in Cabo during the summer is the potential for savings.
July through September falls into Cabo's lower travel season, which means couples may find better rates on resorts, accommodations, flights, and other wedding-related expenses. Hotels and resorts can also have more availability than they do during the busy winter and spring wedding seasons.
For couples working with a specific budget, this can make a destination wedding in Cabo much more attainable.
Instead of spending more simply because you're getting married during peak season, you may be able to put those savings toward something that matters more to you—whether that's upgrading your photography, hosting an incredible rehearsal dinner, adding an extra night for your guests, or creating a more personalized wedding experience.
2. You may have more flexibility with your wedding date
Peak wedding dates in Cabo can book well in advance. Summer often provides couples with more flexibility when choosing their wedding date and securing the vendors they really want.
This can be especially important when it comes to photography.
If you've already found a photographer whose work you love, having more date flexibility can make it easier to build your wedding around their availability rather than having to compromise on your first choice.
3. There are fewer crowds
Cabo is popular for a reason, but there is something special about visiting during a quieter time of year.
With fewer tourists around, your wedding weekend can feel a little more relaxed. Restaurants, excursions, beaches, and other activities may feel less crowded, giving you and your guests more opportunities to enjoy Cabo together.
For destination weddings, this can be a huge benefit.
Your wedding isn't just one day. It's an entire experience with the people you love, and having a little more breathing room can make the entire weekend feel more intimate.
4. The light can be incredible for photography
This is one of my favorite things about summer weddings in Cabo.
The summer weather can create some absolutely incredible skies.
Because July through September can bring dramatic clouds and occasional thunderstorms, sunsets aren't always the perfectly clear, pastel skies you might see in a winter wedding gallery. Instead, you can get big, colorful, dramatic skies that add an entirely different feeling to your wedding photographs.
And as a photographer, I love that.
A little atmospheric drama can make an image feel much more cinematic and emotional.
The key is being willing to embrace whatever the sky gives us rather than expecting every photograph to look exactly like a Pinterest board.
5. Cabo doesn't suddenly become rainy all summer
This is an important misconception.
Summer is Cabo's rainy season, but that doesn't necessarily mean you'll spend your entire wedding week sitting inside.
Los Cabos is still a desert environment, and summer rainfall can often come in short, intense bursts rather than constant rain. The region's tourism board notes that July through September can bring dramatic thunderstorms, while other travel sources identify September as the wettest part of the summer season.
Of course, weather is weather—and there are no guarantees.
But a forecast showing a chance of rain doesn't automatically mean your wedding day is going to be a washout.
Sometimes the storm rolls through, the skies clear, and you end up with an incredible sunset.
The Cons of a Summer Wedding in Cabo
1. It is HOT
Let's start with the obvious one.
Cabo is hot in the summer.
Average high temperatures are around the low 90s°F during July and September, with August typically being even hotter. Humidity also increases during the summer months.
If you're dreaming about a 2 p.m. outdoor ceremony followed by an hour of portraits in direct sunlight, summer may require some adjustments.
But this doesn't mean you can't have beautiful outdoor wedding photographs.
It simply means we need to be intentional about timing.
Late afternoon and evening ceremonies are much more comfortable, and scheduling portraits closer to sunset gives you beautiful light while avoiding the harshest part of the day's heat.
Your guests will appreciate it too.
2. Humidity can be a consideration
Cabo is a desert, but summer doesn't always feel like the dry heat people associate with the destination.
July through September can bring noticeably more humidity.
For couples coming from cooler or drier climates, the combination of heat and humidity can take some getting used to.
This is particularly important to consider when choosing your wedding attire.
Heavy fabrics, multiple layers, and elaborate wedding-day outfits may feel very different at 90+ degrees than they do during a winter wedding.
Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to plan around it.
3. Rain and thunderstorms are possible
This is probably the biggest weather-related concern for summer weddings.
Thunderstorms become more common as summer progresses, with September generally having the greatest potential for significant rainfall.
That means couples getting married in August or September should have a backup plan.
And honestly, I recommend that for every Cabo wedding, regardless of the month.
A good backup plan doesn't mean you expect your wedding to be rained out. It simply means you don't have to panic if Mother Nature decides to make an appearance.
Your planner and venue should have a clear plan for moving the ceremony or reception if necessary.
4. Hurricane season is something to take seriously
The Pacific hurricane season overlaps with the summer wedding season, and September in particular deserves some consideration when choosing your date. While direct hurricane impacts on Cabo are relatively uncommon, tropical systems can still affect travel, flights, weather, and wedding plans.
This is one reason I strongly recommend that destination wedding couples consider travel insurance and make sure they understand their resort and vendor cancellation policies.
It's not about being afraid of a summer wedding.
It's about being prepared.
5. Your timeline needs to be planned differently
This may actually be one of the most important considerations from a photography perspective.
Summer weddings require us to think carefully about when things happen.
Instead of squeezing all of your portraits into the middle of the afternoon, we can build your timeline around the best light and the most comfortable temperatures.
That might mean:
Getting ready earlier
Having your ceremony later in the day
Taking family photographs efficiently
Saving your couple's portraits for closer to sunset
Taking advantage of a few minutes of golden hour
Building in indoor or shaded options
Keeping your guests comfortable between events
A thoughtful timeline can make a huge difference.
So, Should You Get Married in Cabo in the Summer?
My answer?
Absolutely—if you understand what you're signing up for.
A July, August, or September wedding in Cabo isn't going to look exactly like a December or March wedding. The weather is warmer, the humidity is higher, and there is a greater possibility of rain or tropical weather.
But there are also some wonderful advantages.
You may have more flexibility with your date, better pricing, fewer crowds, and more availability. And from a photography standpoint, summer can create some of the most dramatic skies and beautiful sunsets of the year.
The most important thing is to build your wedding day around the season rather than trying to make a summer wedding behave like a winter wedding.
Plan your ceremony for later in the day.
Give your guests opportunities to cool down.
Work with a planner who has experience with Cabo's summer weather.
Have a backup plan.
And choose vendors who understand how to work with the conditions.
As a Cabo wedding photographer, I don't believe that a wedding has to have perfect weather to have beautiful photographs.
Sometimes the unexpected moments—the clouds rolling in, the wind picking up, the sun breaking through after a storm—are exactly what make an image unforgettable.
So if July, August, or September is the time that works best for you and the people you love, don't automatically cross Cabo off your list.
